THE PROMISE
During World War I, an Australian soldier in the trenches said to his dying mate, “I’ll look after your missus and the kids.”
This became known as the Promise - and we still keep it today.
LEGACY NT
Founded in 1923, Legacy NT has proudly supported the families of veterans for more than a century. Today, we continue to care for hundreds of family members who have lost a loved one or whose lives have been significantly impacted by a Defence member's service.
Our support extends to the families of those who served in the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, the Vietnam War, the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns, and numerous peacekeeping operations around the world.
Legacy was built on a simple but powerful promise. In the early years, returned servicemen—known as Legatees—provided practical and compassionate support to the widows and children of their fallen mates. Today, that commitment lives on through a dedicated network of ex-service personnel and volunteers from the wider community who continue to uphold The Promise, ensuring that the families of veterans are never left to face life's challenges alone.
